MBITE Fall Conference Wrap-Up:
Back to School Business

Welcome back to the 2017-18 school year!  The theme back to business is appropriate for so many reasons! Fall is a time when energy levels are high, teachers are looking to implement new ideas, and we have so many hopes for the upcoming school year.  The Fall Conference did not disappoint!  The keynote speaker, Dr. Laura Dunham, really highlighted how business education should be a critical component in education.  Business educators teach creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration EVERY DAY.  The breakout sessions really emphasized that what we do in our classes (accounting, entrepreneurship, technology) matter.

Student Workshop Opportunity:

MBITE Fall Conference keynote speaker, Dr. Laura Dunham from St. Thomas shared fascinating insights into Entrepreneurship as well as an opportunity for high school students to participate in a new venture being hosted by St. Thomas.

Have your students join others from around the state for a fun, and fullday where students will get to see what it takes to be an innovator, to meet like-minded students, and to spend the day on St. Thomas campus with a top Entrepreneurship program and collaborate on ideas. Students will collaborate with others to create a prototype for a business concept and conclude with a viewing of current St. Thomas students who will be pitching their business ideas in the annual Fowler Business Concept Challenge.

This workshop is designed for sophomores, juniors, and seniors (one team up to 4 students per school). Space is limited and a school representative must attend with their team.

When we do our retirement unit, we love playing with this website that uses life insurance data to estimate longevity. Students go through once on their own to the best of their ability and then they spend 10-15 min playing with the features to see what could make people live longer. It is great resource to talk about life insurance and opens the door to talk about healthy choices and how they make a big impact. Could also be a great co-teaching lesson with the health department.
